EV charging carports in Ghana

Charging an electric vehicle at home means the car sits still for hours, usually in the middle of the day, and the charge point lives outdoors for years. Both of those are arguments for a roof. Under a polycarbonate carport the vehicle is not baking while it charges, and the charger is not taking sun and rain directly on its case.

What we build is the structure. A galvanised steel frame on concrete footings, sized around the bay and the cable run so the lead reaches the port without being stretched across the driveway, with a post or upright positioned where the charge point is going to be mounted. If your electrician wants conduit run through the frame or down to a particular point, we put it in while the structure is going up rather than chasing it in afterwards.

To be completely clear about scope: we do not do the electrical work. We do not install the charge point, we do not wire it, and we do not connect anything to your board. That is a qualified electrician's job, and it should be — the structure and the mounting are ours, the electricity is theirs. Tell us who your electrician is at the survey and we will build to what they need.

Questions

EV charging carports: common questions

Ask a question
  • Do you install the charge point itself?

No. We build the carport, mount the bracket or post the charger will sit on, and run conduit where it is needed. Installing the unit, wiring it and connecting it to your board is a qualified electrician's work, and we will not do electrical work we are not licensed for. Most customers have their electrician on site for an hour once the structure is up.

  • Can you work with my electrician?

Yes, and it makes the job much easier. Bring them to the survey or send us their number. They tell us where the supply is coming from, where the unit should sit and what conduit they want; we build the structure around that. Doing it in that order costs nothing extra and avoids drilling into a finished frame later.

  • Shade net or polycarbonate for a charging bay?

Polycarbonate. A shade net will keep the sun off the car but rain passes straight through it, and rain is the thing you want kept off a charge point and its cable connection. If the budget only stretches to shade net, we would put the charger on a wall under its own cover rather than out in the open.

  • Do you install solar panels on the carport?

Not at present. We build the structure and we can discuss framing designed to carry panels later, but we do not supply or install solar. Anyone who tells you a carport frame will take panels without that being planned into the design is guessing at the load — it needs to be decided before the steel is sized.
